Water Trough Cleaning

.
We have eight concrete water troughs at Aurora Farm. They need to be drained and scrubbed regularly and last Saturday was a good day for that.
. .
Leaves fall into the troughs and algae grow on the bottom and the sides. Compare the dirty trough on the left, with the one I just finished scrubbing on the right.
.
.
Cattle love to drink from clean troughs. The water must taste a lot better.
.
The orange rectangular object is a float, As water fills the trough, it pushes the float up, which in turn pulls the string tight and eventually shuts off the fill-valve, thus keeping the trough from overflowing.

  1. That is so neat that the float keeps the trough full but not overflowing! What a great idea! What do you use to clean the troughs?

  2. Bleach works best with a lot of elbow grease. I stir the water with a broom and it takes a lot of the algae and schtuff with it as it goes out the drain. Then I pour bleach on a brush and start scrubbing.
