DeWalt (2004-2011)

.
Last November 2010, I left the farm to work for a seed company in California. As I could not take DeWalt with me, I gave him to William, whose family had purchased most of our herd. Their farm is in Crockett, TX, about three hours south of Quitman.

De Walt
Loyal and Trusty Friend

Tonight, I received an email from William's mom. Below is an excerpt:

"The drought has been tough.  We are holding on to all of our cattle though.  The last girls we purchased from you are calving now.  We had a calf born September 11 (No. 12’s calf) and the others should drop any day.   We have split the herd so we can maximize their grass intake ... but we have been feeding hay since early August.

DeWalt is no longer with us.  We lost him and one of our other dogs in the same week.  We think it was coyotes and they were protecting the place.  Losing the dogs hit us all hard, but we know they were happy on the farm and were protecting the place they loved.  The drought has brought many animals that would never be seen up and in our living space ...
coyotes, foxes, and bobcat and what we think was a wolf.    All were trying to harm livestock (chickens or goats) ... it has been amazing what we have seen."

  1. DeWalt was a great dog and we were so happy to be able to have spent some time with him on Aurora Farm. We were so impressed with the good job he did with the cattle. He was a good friend to you, too, Mr. Lozano, as well as a good worker on the farm. DeWalt will surely be missed! "Good dog, DeWalt. Good dog!"
