Back Rub, Anyone?

.
Horned Flies are a problem at this time of the year. The warm weather and humidity contribute to the population explosion. In addition to making IGR (insect growth repellant) lick tubs available for the cattle, we thought we would hang cattle rubs, too.

Below is a brand new cattle rub that I hung across one of the gates on May 9. The pieces of cloth hanging from it are called, "face flyps". As the cattle pass under, the rub knocks off the flies from their back and applies a very-diluted solution of permethrin to their hair and skin. The flyps take care of the flies on their face.

Permethrin is a neurotoxin, so one needs to wear gloves when handling it. Be careful going under those rubs, too -- they can ... well ... rub you the wrong way.
