Brian's New Calf - From Cow # 174

.
I was chopping firewood around noon today, when I heard a persistent bawling coming from our west pasture. From a distance, I saw that one of the cows was laying on her side with all four legs stretched. As I made my way into the pasture, I saw what looked like little feet coming out of her. She was delivering a calf!
.
After about 40 minutes of labor, Brian's cow (No. 174) birthed a bull calf into the world. I witnessed the entire event -- my very first time to see a cow calve.
.
Here are photos (click to enlarge) of Momma 174 cleaning her new calf. It is truly amazing how the Lord created these creatures: a few minutes after the calf was born, I noticed milk coming from one of the momma cow's udders, and as soon as the calf was strong enough to stand, he instinctively went to nurse -- most likely the smell of the milk was what attracted him to the right place.
